Best Time for a Calanques Tour from Marseille

The Calanques are beautiful year-round, but the right month makes a real difference to your experience — water temperature, trail access, and crowd levels all vary significantly across the year.

May, June, and September are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, light enough on crowds, and before the midsummer trail-closure window bites. If you can only visit in July or August, book a boat tour — they remain accessible even when hiking trails close during fire-risk periods.

Month-by-Month Guide

March–April: The park is green and flowering, and hiking trails are fully open. Water temperature (13–16°C) is cold for swimming but manageable in a short wetsuit. Boat tours run a reduced schedule. Good for hikers and photographers.

May: The ideal shoulder season. Temperatures are warm (20–25°C air), the Mediterranean reaches 17–19°C, crowds are manageable, and all tour types operate. The hillsides are still green before the summer heat.

June: One of the best months — water approaching 21°C, full boat-tour schedules, and hiking trails still open for most of the month. The last week of June sometimes sees the first trail-access closures on high fire-risk days.

July–August: Peak season. Water is warm (24–26°C) and perfect for swimming. However, hiking trails to several coves close without warning on high-risk days (the Préfecture publishes a daily decision by 7 AM). Boat tours almost always operate regardless of trail status, making this the safest way to guarantee access. Book in advance — tours sell out.

September: Underrated. Water stays warm (22–24°C), crowds thin noticeably, and trail closures typically end by mid-September. September light is also excellent for photography. Boat tours and hiking both operate fully.

October–November: Good hiking weather (cooler, no trail closures), but water temperature drops to 18–20°C — still swimmable for the brave. Some boat-tour operators reduce frequency or pause for the season. Check individual operator schedules.

December–February: Quiet and scenic. The limestone cliffs look striking in winter light and the trails are empty. Boat tours are limited. Swimming is cold (14–16°C), but some die-hards do it.
